Cleanings & Prevention

Preventive dental care is the most critical step in achieving and maintaining a healthy and beautiful smile. Simply keeping up with routine dental cleanings and exams, practicing good oral hygiene, and avoiding sugary foods and drinks can help keep your teeth and gums stay healthy and prevent dental issues altogether.

Regular care at Tidewater Dentistry can help to ensure that problems that do arise can be fixed simply and without having to undergo expensive, invasive procedures

Professional Cleanings and Exams

Having professionally dental cleanings every six months with our hygienist is essential if you want to avoid issues like gum disease. Professional cleanings remove hardened plaque from your teeth that, if left for a period of time, can cause your gums to recede and can cause bone loss that leads to loose teeth.

Every routine dental visit also offers the opportunity for Dr. Williamson to examine your teeth and gums and to check for other conditions such as TMJ disorders and oral cancer. If we do find issues like gingivitis or periodontal disease, we are here to help you through the necessary steps to get back to optimal oral health.

Digital X-Rays

Having routine dental x-rays taken is essential for proper monitoring of your oral health.  We utilize the latest digital equipment to limit radiation exposure to our patients and to provide the quickest and easiest treatment.

Without x-rays, we can only able to see about 50% of your tooth structure, so we are not able to properly check for issues in-between the teeth. Our comprehensive x-rays allow us to not only diagnose cavities in your teeth but to check your jaw bones for any issues that may be hidden.

Professional Fluoride Application

We recommend topical fluoride application for both children and adults to strengthen your teeth and help prevent cavities.  This quick and simple procedure during your routine cleaning is a great way to help prevent new problems and strengthen teeth that already have fillings or crowns.

Protective Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a thin coating that we place over these areas to reduce the risk of cavities in the grooves of these teeth. Dental sealants are a great way to help prevent cavities in back teeth with deep grooves that can be difficult to clean and can trap food and sugar. While most people may think sealants are only for kids, some adults may also be candidates for this preventive treatment.
